This video addresses a sensitive topic that often leads to disagreement: not all autism meltdowns are the same. As a parent of an autistic, nonverbal son, I discuss the nuances of these meltdowns, distinguishing between those rooted in pain or sensory overload and those driven by avoidance or control, which require different parenting responses. Understanding child behavior and fostering emotional regulation are key to supporting our children effectively.
Some meltdowns are a communication of pain, sensory overload, or distress — and those require immediate care and support.
But other meltdowns can be about avoidance, control, or wanting something immediately — and those need a very different response.
In this video, I explain:
• The difference between pain-based meltdowns and goal-driven meltdowns
• Why we don’t give in during certain meltdowns — even in public
• What autism meltdowns can look like from the inside of a family
• Why consistency is the reason our son can travel, go out in public, and enjoy life
• What I wish the public understood before judging autistic families
This is not about punishment.
It’s not about ignoring pain.
It’s about teaching regulation, dignity, and safety — even when it’s loud, uncomfortable, and misunderstood.
If you’re a parent, caregiver, educator, or someone who’s ever judged a meltdown in public — this perspective matters.
Please watch with an open mind.
Disagree if you need to — but please be kind.
