We invited Raj Mohan for our Sessies because he is one of the finest singer songwriters and has a real personal style. He was born in Suriname but moved to Holland in 1974. That change affected not only his personal life but also his musical life.

Singer, writer, poet and composer Raj Mohan considers it important to tell his story and that of his ancestors. Because it is part of Dutch history. And he himself is the great-grandchild of Indian contract workers. He sings in Sarnámi, the language of the Surinamese Indians, with great similarities with the Indian accent Bhojpuri.
The common thread through Mohan's work is the hidden history of the 'Kantráki'; the story of how Indians around 1900, after the abolition of slavery, were shipped to Suriname to work as indentured servants.

Raj turned out to be a charismatic singer-songwriter who plays the blues, sung in Hindi, Urdu and Sarnami. In it he combines classical songs from North India (ghazals) with self-written repertoire. And it is remarkable how he performs his songs in the traditional Ghazal setting as well as in pop and jazz.
