Doctoral Research Society of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin presents the first lecture of the third season of the “Meet the Masters" series! Our guest is Professor Susan Petrilli (University of Bari Aldo Moro, Italy), who delivers a lecture entitled "Semioethics. The science of signs in listening" (18. 11. 2024).

Susan Petrilli is Professor of Philosophy and Theory of Languages at the Department of Letters, Languages, Arts – Italian Studies and Comparative Cultures, University of Bari “Aldo Moro,” Italy, and Visiting Research Fellow at the School of Psychology, University of Adelaide, South Australia. As a Visiting Professor and Fellow, she has given lectures around the world from South Africa to Canada and from China to Brazil, USA, Helsinki and Warsaw. She is one of leading modern semiotician, and author of original theories and methodological approach. Her principal research areas include philosophy of language, semiotics, bio-semiotics, general linguistics, communication studies, translation theory, theory of literary language, gender and identity studies, relation between signs and values, problem of ideology, gift economy, and problem of subjectivity. Professor Petrilli’s research is distinguished by its holistic approach and deep humanism. Her most important books include: Semioetica (with A. Ponzio), Rome, Meltemi, 2003, Sign Crossroads in Global Perspective. Semioethics and Responsibility (Routledge 2010), Sign Studies and Semioethics: Communication, Translation and Values (De Gruyter 2014), Signs, Language and Listening. A Semioethic Perspective, (Legas 2018), Semioethics as Existential Dialogue: The Gift and Burden of Responsibility (Routledge 2025), co-edited books with Meng Ji: Exploring the Translatability of Emotions: Cross-Cultural and Transdisciplinary Encounters (Palgrave Macmillan 2022) and Intersemiotic Approaches to Emotions: Translating Across Signs, Bodies, and Values (Routledge 2022).

The series of lectures "Meet the Masters" was organized by the Doctoral Research Society of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin and supervised by Professor Małgorzata Gamrat. The series was aimed at all PhD students, academics, researchers, and students, especially those interested in interdisciplinary research.
