A bench of Justices J.K. Maheshwari and A.S. Chandurkar observed that highways must not become “corridors of peril” due to negligence or infrastructure gaps. The Court noted that although national highways make up only about 2% of India’s road network, they account for nearly 30% of road fatalities.

The order was passed in a suo motu case following fatal accidents in Phalodi (Rajasthan) and Rangareddy (Telangana) that claimed 34 lives. The Court issued several directions, including restrictions on roadside parking, removal of illegal structures within highway zones, and tighter regulation of commercial establishments along highways. Authorities have also been directed to enforce safety measures through digital monitoring systems. The Supreme Court emphasized that these steps aim to reduce accidents and improve road safety across the country.
