Protesters erupted with shouts as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. prepared to describe the Trump administration’s health budget before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Wednesday.
Kennedy appeared startled by the interruption. Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., stopped the meeting and told Capitol police offers to remove the protesters from the room.
“Members of the audience are reminded that disruptions will not be tolerated,” Cassidy said.
Protesters’ messages ranged from concern about AIDS to the role Congress played in funding strikes on Gaza. After police removed the protesters from the room, Cassidy chuckled, calling the outburst a moment “made for C-SPAN.”
Then, Kennedy continued with his remarks on the Trump administration’s Make America Healthy Again agenda and proposed cuts. For fiscal year 2026, the Trump administration has proposed a nearly $94 billion budget for the Department of Health and Human Services, cutting more than a quarter of the current year’s budget.
