Why are there constant references to fairies in Scotland and Ireland? From the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye to Fairy trees in Ireland, it’s remarkable how many things are named after fairies, and for good reason, as fairies play such a significant part in the mythology and folklore of these countries.

Now, as soon as I start talking about Faires, you’d be forgiven for thinking that I’ve lost my mind, or away with the fairies as we say in Scotland. But don’t worry, I’m no more crazy than I was last week. On its surface fairies may sound like a silly subject, but there is a whole lot more to this story than mere stupidity.

Today, I’ve come to Doon Hill and Fairy Knowe in Aberfoyle, a reputed home of the fairies. Tons of glens, bridges and walks are named after fairies. The Fairy Glen in Rosemarkie is one for instance. It was once known for ‘well-dressing ceremonies’, where local children would decorate springs with flowers in the hope that the fairies would keep the water clean. Another is the fairy bridge on the Isle of Skye, where local legend says that the chief of the old Clan MacLeod once married a fairy princess before she had to return to fairyland.

Stories relating to fairies are so widespread across Scotland and Ireland that you often stumble across them even when you’re not remotely looking for them. Even a few weeks ago, when I travelled to Dunadd to make a video on the capital of Dal Raida, I randomly came across a story of fairies. A carved stone ball was found at Dunadd from thousands of years ago. According to local legend, stone balls and other artefacts with magical powers were abandoned by fairies at the bottom of the hill fort.
In Ireland, there’s a prominent tradition relating to fairy trees. I will link a video in the description below. Some farmers in Ireland won’t clear certain trees and bushes are they consider them to belong to the fairies, or the other world. Other tell tales of fairies putting the stray on people, meaning that they out under a spell and getting led astray.

The Aos Sí is an Irish name for supernatural race in Celtic mythology. They are said to descend from fallen angles or the Tuatha Dé Danann...
