Yuri TS Oganessian spoke at ORNL on Friday, January 27, as part of ORNL's celebration of the discovery and dedication of element 117, tennessine. The ceremony honored the tennessine research team and featured the cooperation of U.S .research groups and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia.
A pioneer of both cold and hot fusion nucleosynthesis, Oganessian has dedicated his life towards the discovery and synthesis of new elements and the pursuit of knowledge beyond our current understanding. He and his team have been involved in the discovery of several elements. Element 118, oganesson, is named in his honor.
