Outsider art reflects the lived realities of people on the margins—many of whom have experienced addiction, trauma, or social exclusion. Created outside formal art systems, outsider art can be a raw form of self-expression and survival, offering individuals a way to process pain, identity, and recovery when other supports are limited or unavailable. While addiction is not a prerequisite for outsider art, the two intersect where unmet mental health needs, isolation, and stigma exist—making creative expression both a coping strategy and, at times, a powerful bridge to healing, connection, and prevention-focused conversations.
Timothy Mark Davis is an independent filmmaker and Producing Artistic Director of New City Players, an award-winning professional theatre company in Broward County. Through his production company, Stone Circle Media, he has produced four short films addressing the opioid epidemic, including The Gaps and The Cost—both created for and screened at prior South Florida Addiction Prevention & Solutions Summits. The Cost was also an official selection at FLIFFShorts and the Global Peace Film Festival. At this year's summit, he introduces a short made for the nonprofit NAEMI, whose mission promote the artistic works of outsider artists, and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness by discovering, studying, promoting, exhibiting and preserving works of artistic excellence created by artists recovering from mental illnesses worldwide. His broader producing credits include Konpa (2023 Tribeca Festival) and his directorial feature debut Thank You, Places!. He is a Carbonell Award-winning actor and holds an M.A. in Theatre Studies.
