During 1983, Horowitz's playing had begun to take a decline and rumours began to spread that he was on medications and drinking. From the performances recorded and reviews from the concerts, many noted the noticeable amount of mistakes in each performance, with many coming to a conclusion his technique was getting worse.
Before the infamous Japan concert Horowitz toured around America with two of them being recorded, a New York performance in the Metropolitan Opera House and another one a month prior in Boston's Symphony hall.
During this year he would only play one programme which consisted of a Beethoven sonata, Schumann's Carnaval, and Chopin pieces ranging from two Polonaises and three Etudes.
Though the two performances were professionally recorded, the later half of the recitals consisting of the Chopin pieces are a lower audio quality compared to the rest, this was caused by damaged tapes, leading to Sony having to use private recordings in the released of the previously unreleased recitals.
