Описание: Following William Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence, Kansas, Order No. 11 called for the complete evacuation of all citizens in Jackson, Cass, Bates, and Vernon Counties, with the goal of depopulating the Missouri-Kansas border of southern sympathizers. The Order , issued in 1863, affected all residents of these counties, regardless of political support, and arguably served as a turning point in the start of the Civil War. Artist George Caleb Bingham explored the racial, political, and socio-economic complexities that led to the start of the Civil War right in his own backyard in his controversial painting Order No. 11.
