Jodeci were more than just an R&B group — they were a cultural phenom. Formed in the early 1990s, the quartet of K-Ci, JoJo, DeVante Swing, and Mr. Dalvin emerged from strict gospel roots to completely redefine what R&B could sound and look like. Blending church-trained vocals with hip-hop attitude and raw emotion, Jodeci introduced a darker, grittier edge to the genre that stood in stark contrast to the polished image of their peers.
Their debut album Forever My Lady turned them into stars, producing classic records like “Come and Talk to Me,” “Stay,” and the title track. With their follow-up album Diary of a Mad Band, Jodeci pushed their sound even further, delivering a more aggressive, experimental style that helped shape the direction of ’90s R&B and solidified their place as one of the era’s most influential groups.
But behind the success was a much darker reality. As fame grew, so did internal tension, substance abuse, legal trouble, and personal trauma. The group’s excesses and lifestyle began to take their toll, leading to a long absence during the late ’90s just as newer R&B groups stepped in to fill the void they left behind.
This video explores the full story of Jodeci — from their church beginnings and groundbreaking rise, to the chaos that nearly destroyed them, and the legacy they ultimately left behind. This is the story of Jodeci: the original bad boys of R&B.
