Easy Cosmoline Removal: Cleaning a Mosin Nagant

I found chemical resistant, glass fiber reinforced tanks (http://amzn.to/2BTOPV5), also nesting containers, are the easiest way to contain all of the firearm's parts which need cleaning. They are also referred to as a Nesting Container. Since its chemical resistant and durable, it will provide a lifetime of use for a very reasonable price.

Usually I will use Mineral Spirits (http://amzn.to/2siWSqg) to soak the firearm's metal parts... But always check a smaller part with finish before soaking all parts in the mineral spirits to ensure that the chemical won't have any negative effects on the finish of the gun.

After soaking for an hour (or as needed), I will rinse each part down with water prior to using a blow dryer to get rid of as much excess water as possible. If needed, I will sometimes put the metal parts on a baking tray to be set in the oven at 175 degrees for around 30 minutes to evaporate the remaining water in spots I can't see. Cosmoline also has a melting point around that temperature, which will allow any cosmoline left behind to drain out. Keep in mind, this part of the process does make a temporary unpleasant smell, which is bearable, but can get you in trouble with the better half :)

Lastly, I will go over each metal piece with a good gun oil or lubricant, like Hoppe's #9 Gun Oil (http://amzn.to/2BUwQOl).

I will also use basic gun cleaning tools (http://amzn.to/2FiWsmo) to get rid of any cosmoline or residue left behind.
