The city of Dubuque, named after him, was chartered in 1833 and became part of the Iowa Territory in 1838, and subsequently the State of Iowa in 1846. Following the depletion of lead resources, Dubuque transitioned to a center of the timber industry and later diversified into other sectors such as boat building, brewing, and railroads.

Economically, Dubuque has seen various transformations. In the early 20th century, it was home to the brass era automobile company, Adams-Farwell, and experienced significant industrial growth. However, the decline of manufacturing in the 1980s led to economic challenges.
