But in June 2014, everything changed.
In just six days, Mosul fell to the so-called Islamic State.
Half a million people fled.
Books were burned. Shrines were destroyed.
Women were silenced.
The city vanished into darkness.
What followed was not just a military occupation—it was a cultural erasure. A historic city reduced
to shadows.
And then came the war to take it all back.
After years of brutal fighting, Mosul was declared free in July 2017. But what remained was
devastation: rubble where homes once stood, silence where markets once sang, grief where memory
once lived. Entire neighborhoods flattened. Tens of thousands dead. Victory had a cost.
Yet even in the ruins, something stirred.
Families returned.
Schools reopened—sometimes in tents, sometimes without walls.
The smell of fresh bread and the sound of children laughing returned to the streets.
And in the heart of the Old City, the Al-Nuri Mosque—blown apart by ISIS—began to rise again,
stone by stone.
This film is more than a war documentary.
