Chekhov's sock-drawer play gets a fresh look.
Anton Chekhov's first play, ''Platonov'', went undiscovered until 1920, 16 years after the playwright's death. Andrew Upton breathes new life into the piece with an adaptation called ''The Present'', set in the mid-1990s at an old country house where friends gather to celebrate the birthday of the widow Anna Petrovna. Under the direction of John Crowley, Cate Blanchett takes on the role of Petrovna opposite Richard Roxburgh, who plays the acerbic Platonov. The pair, who reprises the performances they originated in the world-premiere production at the Sydney Theatre Company in 2015, shared with TheaterMania how it feels to bring the Chekhovian gem to Broadway's Barrymore Theatre.
