Record labels have a built-in restriction that does not allow the artist to record the same song(s) they were signed for.
Why? Because those recordings become a competition to what the label is marketing for.
How long do they last? It depends, but the standard is 5 years, in some cases, it can go up to 15 years.
Check on that clause before you sign.
