How to Speed Up Shader Compilation on Steam (Increase CPU Cores/Threads for Background Processing)
In this video, I’ll show you how to change the number of CPU cores and threads that Steam uses to compile shaders in the background. This will help reduce the time it takes for shader compilation, improving your gaming experience.
✅ Step 1: Enable Background Shader Pre-Caching
1. Open Steam, go to Steam \ Settings \ Downloads.
2. Scroll down to the Shader Pre-Caching section.
3. Toggle on:
Enable Shader Pre-Caching
Allow background processing of Vulkan shaders
By default, Steam uses a single CPU core or two threads, but you can adjust this setting for faster compilation.
🛠️ Step 2: Change CPU/Threads for Shader Compilation
1. Open your file browser and enable hidden files.
2. Navigate to the following directory:
For most distributions:
~/.local/share/Steam/
For Ubuntu-based distributions:
~/.steam/debian-installation
3. Inside this directory, create a new file called steam_dev.cfg.
4. Add the following line to the file:
unShaderBackgroundProcessingThreads 10
The number represents how many CPU threads you want Steam to use for shader compilation. Feel free to adjust this based on your CPU capabilities.
5. Save the file and restart Steam.
Now your shaders will compile much faster using the specified number of CPU threads!
