D’Angelo was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer who became one of the defining voices of the neo-soul era. Celebrated for his artistry and influence, Billboard recognized him among the greatest R&B performers, while Rolling Stone placed him on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2025, he was honored with induction into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.
He first rose to prominence in 1994 after co-writing and co-producing “U Will Know” for the R&B collective Black Men United. The following year, he released his debut album Brown Sugar, which earned platinum certification from the RIAA and widespread critical praise. Many critics credit the project with helping launch the neo-soul movement. The album included standout tracks such as the title song “Brown Sugar,” a cover of Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin’,” and “Lady,” which climbed into the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100.
