Thank you all for coming to celebrate Scouting America’s 115th
birthday!
Scouting began as a program for boys aged 11 to 18 by Robert
Baden-Powell.
1907: The first experimental camp was organized by Baden-Powell-or
BP- with 20 boys at Brownsea Island, in the United Kingdom. It was a
great success.
1908: Baden-Powell published the book “Scouting for Boys”, which
was an immediate hit and has since sold over 100 million copies.
Here is the beginning of Scouting America- In 1909, Chicago publisher
William D. Boyce was visiting London, and as legend has it, lost his
way in a dense London fog. A boy came to his aid and, after guiding
the man, refused a tip, explaining that as a Scout he would not take a
tip for doing a Good Turn.
A year later, In 1910: Scouting America was established by
Congressional Charter.
In 1912- The first Eagle badge was awarded to Arthur R. Eldred, a 17-
year-old member of Troop 1 in Oceanside, Long Island, N.Y., on Labor
Day- more than a year and a half after the BSA's birth.
1916: Baden-Powell founded the Wolf Cubs as a parallel organization
to the Boy Scouts of America This grew into the Cub Scout program
In 1935: Scouting America created a “Senior Scout” division for boys
15 and older. The Senior Scout programs included the Sea Scouts, Air
Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Rover Scouts, and a few others.
In 1969: Scouting America allowed young women ages 14 to 20 to join
special-interest Explorer posts.
In 1998: Venturing was officially created by the Scouting America
executive board. The old Exploring program was completely
reorganized and All the career-oriented posts were moved to Learning
for Life under the name Exploring, while the rest (including outdoor-
oriented posts) became the new Venturing program.
Sea Exploring was renamed Sea Scouting and placed under the
Venturing program. Venturing retained the forest green uniform of
Exploring. Now- Let’s wish Scouting America Happy Birthday!
