Tight calves are common when you run as your body responds to the stress placed on the main calf muscles, which include your gastrocnemius (larger calf muscle) and soleus muscle, a smaller muscle beneath it.
I run regularly, so doing this deep stretch (1 minute on each side with a straight leg and then the same with a bent leg) helps to loosen my muscles and prevent excessive contraction of tissues between runs.
