The Mighty Beyer-Garrat 6029: Australia's Powerhouse Steam Locomotive

Описание: Built by Beyer, Peacock and Company in Manchester for the New South Wales Government Railways, Australia’s largest operating steam locomotive, Beyer-Garratt 6029 was a remarkable locomotive that was part of the AD60 class. This class featured a unique wheel configuration of 4-8-4+4-8-4, with three articulated parts that allowed the locomotives to navigate 6-chain curves with ease.

The AD60 class, consisting of a total of 42 locomotives, was the only type of Garratt to operate in New South Wales. These engines were the largest and most powerful steam locomotives ever to run in Australia. The first engine, 6002, entered service in July 1952, with the final engine, 6042, delivered in January 1957. 6029 joined the ranks in 1954, serving on various lines including the Main North, Main South, and Main Western.

After nearly two decades of service, 6029 was retired in September 1972. However, in 1974, the Australian Railway Historical Society's ACT division acquired the engine. Despite facing boiler issues in 1982, the locomotive continued to operate heritage tours until its restoration in 2014.

Following an eight-year restoration project, which involved obtaining a replacement boiler, 6029 returned to service on 28 February 2015. Interestingly, parts from the first engine in the AD60 class, 6002, were utilized in the restoration of 6029, adding to the historical significance of this iconic locomotive.
