'Exaltation of King James' is an English royalist song celebrating King James II's reign. The song does appear to have written during his reign, as it’s in a few 17th century songbooks.
James, who reigned over England and Scotland from 1685 to 1688, attempted to increase the power of the monarchy and grant religious freedom to Catholics. His reign ultimately led to his dethroning in 1688. His Anglican daughter Mary and her husband would take the thrones of England and Scotland as Mary II and William III.
