Adam's Peak is a 2,243 m (7,359 ft) conical sacred mountain located in central Sri Lanka. The imprint is considered to be the footprint of the Buddha in Buddhist tradition, the footprint of Hanuman or Shiva in Sri Lankan Hindu tradition, and the footprint of Adam or Saint Thomas in some Islamic and Christian traditions. The mountain is located in the southernmost part of the Central Highlands in the Sabaragamuwa Province and the Ratnapura Districts of the Central Province and Nuwara Eliya Districts - 40 km (25 mi) northeast of Ratnapura and 32 km (20 mi) southwest of Hatton. The surrounding region is mostly forested hills, with no other mountain of similar size nearby. The region along the mountain is a wildlife reserve, home to a wide variety of species, from elephants to leopards, and includes many endemic species. Adam's Peak is important as a watershed. The districts to the south and east of Adam's Peak produce precious stones - emeralds, rubies and sapphires - for which the island is famous, hence the ancient name Ratnadvipa. Sri Pada is mentioned in the 5th century chronicle Mahavamsa, which states that the Buddha ascended the peak. The Rajavaliya states that King Walagamba (1st century BCE) took refuge in the forests of Adam's Peak against Indian invaders and later returned to Anuradhapura. Fa Hian, a famous Chinese pilgrim and Buddhist traveler, wrote in 1100 CE that Sri Pada was the first to reach the peak of the mountain. It is not clear whether he actually visited Sri Lanka in 411–12 CE. The Mahavamsa again mentions a visit to the mountain by King Vijayabahu I (1058–1114 CE). The Ambagamuwa inscription of King Vijayabahu I states that the king himself climbed the mountain and worshipped the footprint of the Buddha on the mountain. For Buddhists, the footprint is the left foot of the Buddha left when the Buddha arrived in Sri Lanka, and is considered a symbol of worship at the invitation of the Buddhist god Saman.
