Biology of Neuroglial Cells
Neuroglial cells, or glial cells, are non-neuronal cells in the nervous system that support, protect, and maintain the function of neurons. They do not conduct electrical impulses but are essential for the nervous system's health and functionality. Key types include:
Astrocytes: Provide structural support, regulate the blood-brain barrier, and maintain the chemical environment.
Oligodendrocytes (CNS) and Schwann cells (PNS): Produce myelin to insulate axons, speeding up nerve impulse transmission.
Microglia: Act as immune cells, clearing debris and protecting against pathogens.
Ependymal cells: Line brain ventricles and produce cerebrospinal fluid.
