In this episode of MEOLOGY815, I’m breaking down a question a lot of people are quietly asking: Can ChatGPT actually help with loneliness — or can it start replacing real connection?
We’ll cover what the research says about AI companions, including evidence that AI companion interactions can reduce loneliness in the moment, with “feeling heard” showing up as a key mechanism.
Then we zoom out to the broader mental-health chatbot evidence (systematic review + meta-analysis), and what factors seem to influence outcomes.
I also walk through a simple self-experiment I’m running (AI week vs human-connection week) to track loneliness, calm vs wired, avoidance, craving/pull, and sleep — because the real question isn’t “Is AI good or bad?” It’s: what does it do to me?
We’ll also talk about the risk zone: research from OpenAI + MIT Media Lab suggests very high usage can correlate with self-reported dependence indicators, and the effects can depend on usage patterns and baseline emotional state.
