After standing on Kinmen and looking toward the mainland, I crossed the strait to see the other side.
This time, I travelled to Pingtan Island (平潭岛) — Mainland China’s closest point to Taiwan, and the mirror image of Kinmen across the water.
Once a front-line military outpost filled with bunkers and observation posts, Pingtan has been reshaped into a windswept island of fishing villages, wind farms and quiet coastlines. But its location — just 68 nautical miles from Taiwan — keeps it at the heart of the same story that has defined the Taiwan Strait for decades.
In this film I explore Pingtan’s defence relics, stone villages and vast coastal views, uncovering how history, culture and geopolitics collide on the mainland side of Asia’s biggest flashpoint.
