Chandni Chowk Heritage Walk – Jain Temple, Sis Ganj Sahib, Baptist Church & More
Chandni Chowk Monuments in One Walk is a heritage route in Delhi that explores the historic core of Chandni Chowk in Shahjahanabad. The walk connects several major religious, cultural, and architectural landmarks including Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, Gauri Shankar Temple, Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib, Central Baptist Church, Fatehpuri Masjid, Begum Samru Palace, Hardayal Municipal Heritage Public Library, and Ghalib Ki Haveli. The route also passes through historic marketplaces such as Khari Baoli and Lala Lajpat Rai Market, offering a comprehensive view of the cultural, religious, and commercial heritage of Old Delhi.
The area reflects centuries of layered history beginning with the Mughal period. The Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, built in 1656 during the reign of Shah Jahan, is one of the oldest Jain temples in Delhi and is widely known for its bird hospital. Nearby stands the ancient Gauri Shankar Temple, believed to be several centuries old. A major Sikh pilgrimage site, Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib, commemorates the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur in 1675.
The route also highlights colonial and later architectural developments in Chandni Chowk. The building of the State Bank of India was originally associated with the Imperial Bank during the British period and retains classical colonial architectural elements such as arches and pillars. Another prominent structure is Begum Samru Palace, once the residence of Begum Samru, which later became a branch of the Central Bank of India.
Cultural and literary heritage sites are also part of the walk. The historic Hardayal Municipal Heritage Public Library, established in 1862, preserves thousands of rare books and manuscripts, including early copies of the Akbarnama. In the nearby neighborhood of Ballimaran stands Ghalib Ki Haveli, where the renowned Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib spent his later years.
The walk also passes through some of Old Delhi’s most famous markets. Khari Baoli is considered Asia’s largest wholesale spice market, while Lala Lajpat Rai Market developed after the 1947 partition to provide livelihoods for refugees. At the western end of Chandni Chowk stands Fatehpuri Masjid, built in 1650 by Fatehpuri Begum, one of the wives of Shah Jahan.
Today, this walking route is often used by heritage enthusiasts to explore the architectural, religious, and cultural layers of Old Delhi. The area is easily accessible via the Delhi Metro, with Chandni Chowk Metro Station serving as the main entry point to the historic street.
