Arriving in Mobile, Alabama, nothing looked the way people had warned us it would. The streets were clean and walkable, almost European in feel. Balconies draped with ironwork reminded us of New Orleans, and from one of them, a jazz band drifted down into the Monday sun. People sat outside with cold beers, restaurants spilled out onto the sidewalks, and for a moment it felt like the South was rewriting its own reputation right in front of us.

That night we stayed in a £50 roadside motel. Pulling in, we were nervous about what we’d find, but instead got a quiet surprise, a tidy room, clean sheets, and one of the best night’s sleep of the trip. Sometimes simple comforts mean the most.

The next day we went searching for something truly local and found ourselves at the Dew Drop Inn, Mobile’s oldest restaurant. A place with no pretension, just time-tested flavor. The hot dog arrived split down the middle, caramelized edges carrying the weight of decades of habit. The po-boy was dressed the old way, crunchy bread hugging soft fillings, built not for looks but for eating. It was the kind of food that tells a story about a city, a reminder that history lives on a plate.

Mobile had already surprised us, and with every step, bite, and sound, Alabama felt a little less like the cliché we’d been told to expect and more like a place we couldn’t wait to know better.
