Today's major story is Tropical Cyclone Maila, now a Category 3 system over the Solomon Sea. The latest Euro and GFS modelling is suggesting significant weakening before the system reaches Queensland — but this is not yet confirmed. In today's forecast we break down the three scientific mechanisms behind the potential weakening: cold water upwelling, increasing vertical wind shear, and land interaction with Papua New Guinea.
Elsewhere across the country, a cold front pushing through the southeast is bringing damaging winds, coastal swells and shower activity to Victoria, Tasmania and parts of New South Wales. Severe Weather Warnings are current for damaging winds across Gippsland, the South Coast, Snowy Mountains and Tasmania. A Major Flood Warning is active for Eyre Creek across outback Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
