During the summer of 1986, my good friend Alan travelled around the UK, armed with a hefty VHS camera, recording the railway scene. I'm delighted to be able to bring you the results. In Part 10, Alan continues his exploration of the North Wales Coast Mainline. On arrival at Holyhead, he makes a dash out to the stabling point where he films two Class 47 hauled trains. The first is (I think!) the 1245 1A56 departure for Euston whilst the second I believe to be 47530 shunting the ECS that will form the 1315 departure. If I remember correctly, the 1245 would run express along the coast, calling only at Lllandudno Junction and Chester, whereas the 1315 would call at all the other major stations as well. Alan must have caught the 1315 back to Bangor because the next shot we see is 33003 arriving with 1V09, the 1408 Holyhead to Cardiff Central. This working had only recently introduced the Southern Region Class 33s to the North Wales Coast and was a particular favourite of many enthusiasts, myself included. Alan's next shot is of 47455 leaving Llandudno Junction in westerly direction, heading over the causeway towards Conway. In true Welsh style, the rain beats down as we see an up Euston service arriving from the Conway direction, hauled by a double headed class 47. Given that 47518 is in ex-works large logo livery, I am guessing that it was on test from Crewe following overhaul, something that happened regularly on this line.
