In this Episode we are exploring one of the best tourist destinations in Sri Lanka, Dambulla. Before you visit dambulla here are the things that you need to know.
Dambulla is one of the main points in the Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. Dambulla has significant historical importance inhabited from the 7th to 3rd century
The most popular route is Colombo Kandy highway you can visit Kandy and then using A9 road can visit dumbbell. It will take about 4hours to visit Dambulla by this route. There's another route. Enter to Colombo Kandy highway and exit form ambepussa and entered to ambepussa -Trincomalee highway. This route will take 4hours to reach Dambulla. These roads are comfortable, but you may find bit of a heavy traffic because it connects major cities in Sri Lanka. If you wish to travel in public transport, then you need to take route no 15 and 48 buses. There are no trains operate near Dambulla.
You will find bit of high temperature in Dambulla, varying from 25C - 32C. The average annual temperature is around 26C. The best time of year to visit Dambulla is from late August to early September and from late December to late March. September to December is monsoon season in Dambulla.
If you are visiting here for general outdoor tourist activities, we suggest you to come in-between mid-December to early March.
Since Sri Lanka is a tropical country and weather is unpredictable. Generally, you better bring an umbrella or a rain jacket. As I mentioned earlier the temperature in Dambulla is high. Therefore, you better keep water with you. Don't worry you can buy Water bottles at any place in Dambulla. Most of the activities in the Dambulla are general outdoor, therefore you need to bring sun cream and a pair of outdoor sneakers to climb rocks, a Cap or a hat and a sunshade if you want. Always keep cash, sometimes ATM card might not be acceptable.
Dambulla has very famous attractions like Golden Cave Temple, Sigiriya rock, Pidurangala Rock, Minneriya national park, Village tours, Kawudulla National park and hot air balloons. Not just that this area is having very famous high-end hotels and restaurants. If you are willing to enjoy everything , you might need 2 to 3 days. But if you are willing to cover Dambulla within a day then you must visit as early as possible because with the hot climate you might find difficult to say outside at noon.
Here are the most iconic places to visit in Dambulla
1. Sigiriya
Wear shoes. bring a cap/hat sun cream and some water bottles. open 6.30 am. Tickiet 14USD for foreigners. Its about 2 to 3 hours tour.
2. Cave temples
Wear a white or light color dress. cover your shoulders and up until knees. No shoes cap/hat are allowed inside temple. Ticket 14 USD. Its about 1-2h tour
3.Village tour
Wear a cap/ hat Can grab the lunch from the village. Ticket 8 USD. 2h
4. Pidurangala
Its 1-2 h hike, you can enjoy the sunset with good view of Sigiriya rock. wear shoes, bring some water bottles. Ticket 8 USD.
5. Minneriya national park
3h-4h tour. To see elephants and wild animals. We recommend the evening tour. Ticket 15-25 USD.
