PLAYWRIGHT'S and DIRECTOR’S NOTES
Woman—as embodied by Sita of the ancient Ramayana—confronts the expectations of “Woman” in the twenty-first Century. Our performance addresses the changing roles of Woman, in all her human virtues and frailties. These roles take root in the Hindu expectations of "dharma" and the Western expectations of an “empowered” person.
Interest is spurred by the narrative showing Rama’s insistence to prove the purity and integrity of Sita a year after her abduction by his arch-enemy Lawana. We sense Lawana’s relentless pursuit of Sita and wonder about the motivations that drive the actions of these three characters to and against each other.
All these become intriguing ingredients of a narrative that has been well received in countries where the Ramayana is heritage – Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Bangkok, Singapore, and more significantly Ayodhya, Rama’s kingdom in Utter Pradesh, where our play main featured Diwali, the Holy Festival of Lights.
