Jan Chalon (1738-1765): Sonata 5 in g-minor, Opus 1,5 (1759)

In 1759, a set of 6 sonatas was published in Amsterdam. It bore a title page in French; the works were attributed to a composer named “Jean Chalon”. This man was most likely the son of Hendrik Chalon of Amsterdam, who was also a musician, and who died in Leyden at an advanced age in 1790. His (probable) son Jan did not have the good fortune to live so long. Born in 1738, he passed away when only about 27 years old. His six sonatas from 1759 were thus composed when he was at most 21 years old. Nonetheless, they are fine works that show that Jan had been taught well, though we don’t know whether he had only been instructed by his father, or whether he also took lessons from other masters. From 1754 to 1763 he held a position as organist in Amsterdam, which he gave up in that latter year. Could it be that his health was already on the decline? Jan had a brother named Hendrik Louis Chalon who lived in Paris, and who was probably also a musician.
