Did you know a 120-pound woman once used Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to choke out a 200-pound man in seconds?
BJJ is called the ‘gentle art’ because it lets you defeat stronger opponents with leverage—not muscle. But when you’re starting out, it feels ANYTHING but gentle. You’re drowning in techniques, getting smashed while rolling, and wondering if you’ll ever ‘get it.’ It took me a couple years before I could finally, confidently say, “Ok, I think this is starting to make more sense.”
Here’s the truth: Every black belt was once a white belt who couldn’t tie their own belt. Today, we’ll go over five essential moves that can help you survive—and dominate—as a beginner. Master these, and you’ll out-grapple bigger opponents faster than you think. One thing worth mentioning, mat time is essential, there’s things you’ll learn on the mat you won’t and can’t learn from drilling. More mat time is and will always be one of the most beneficial ways to grow, plus it’s the best part of BJJ. Getting humbled by a teenager really opens your eyes. On the flip side, tapping someone you never thought you could, makes you realize why we train.
