Historian Benjamin Gross Shares the Surprising History of LCDs at RCA

One day, they predicted, liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) would find a home in clocks, calculators, and even televisions that could hang on the wall. Half a century later RCA’s dreams have become a reality. Yet the company responsible for producing the first LCDs was unable to capitalize on its invention. What happened?

On May 20, 2020, Benjamin Gross of the Linda Hall Library shared his research on the history of LCDs at the RCA. This talk is based on his book, The TVs of Tomorrow: How RCA’s Flat-Screen Dreams Led to the First LCDs, published in 2018 by the University of Chicago Press as part of the Science History Institute’s Synthesis series.
