An Audrain County shelter has become one of just eight groups in Missouri to implement a cutting-edge tool, designed to help identify possible indicators of a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Ravae Moore, the executive director of the Audrain County Shelter Resource Coalition, said the group recently teamed up with experts at the University of Missouri-Kansas City's Institute for Human Development. Through this partnership, the shelter was trained how to screen people for a traumatic brain injury using the Online Brain Injury Screening and Support System (OBISSS).
Beth Dauber, the project coordinator for the Health and Aging Team with the Institute for Human Development, said screenings typically take between 15 to 20 minutes to complete. She said if residents screen positive for a TBI, they then fill out a symptom questionnaire.
