Title – Quantities Preserved by Mimetic Differences for Systems of Conservation Laws
In this colloquium, Dr. Miguel Dumett presents the mimetic differences method, a high-order numerical approach for solving partial differential equations that preserves key physical quantities such as mass, momentum, and energy. The method is derived from a discrete approximation of the integration by parts identity and uses staggered grids to maintain uniform accuracy across the computational domain—including boundary points—without requiring ghost cells.
Dr. Dumett explains how mimetic operators replicate the core vector calculus identities in discrete form and demonstrates their application to systems of conservation laws with smooth coefficients. Through examples in one and multiple dimensions, the talk highlights the method’s accuracy, conservation properties, and flexibility, as well as its successful application to problems ranging from fluid dynamics to biological modeling such as wound healing.
