🕹️ Classic arcade games reviewed against their Commodore 64 and Amiga home ports — from Out Run and R-Type to Golden Axe, Double Dragon, Space Harrier and more.
Arcade games in the 1980s and early 1990s were built to impress: big cabinets, bold graphics, fast action, custom hardware, loud sound and that magical feeling of putting 10p or 20p into a machine that looked miles ahead of anything at home.
But when those arcade games came home to the Commodore 64 and Amiga, the experience often changed. This video looks at some of my favourite arcade games from the 80s and early 90s, comparing the original arcade versions with their C64 and Amiga ports.
Featured games include Dragon’s Lair, Out Run, After Burner, Space Harrier, R-Type, Golden Axe, Double Dragon, Rolling Thunder, Street Fighter and Splatterhouse.
Some home versions tried to recreate the arcade spectacle as closely as possible. Others had to take a completely different approach to make the game work on 8-bit and 16-bit home computer hardware. Sometimes that meant a surprisingly playable version. Sometimes it meant missing speed, smaller sprites, weaker sound, changed level structure, awkward controls, or a conversion that could never really match the machine in the arcade.
Across the Commodore 64 and Amiga, we look at how speed, visuals, sound, controls and gameplay changed between arcade and home versions — and why some ports still hold up better than others today.
This is not just about which version looked best. It is about what survived the journey home, what was lost, and which arcade ports still deserve respect.
