Why Crew Heat the Anchor Windlass Brake | Ship Anchoring Safety Explained
In this video, the ship’s crew heats the anchor windlass brake using a blowtorch during routine anchoring maintenance.
This procedure is carried out when the brake becomes seized due to rust, hardened grease, or moisture inside the brake lining. Applying controlled heat causes the metal components to expand, helping to break rust bonds and soften old grease trapped between the brake surfaces.
Heating also dries out moisture from the brake lining, restoring proper friction. Once the brake is freed and correctly adjusted, it operates smoothly and allows the anchor to be lowered safely under full control.
This is a common and practical onboard maintenance technique used by deck crew to ensure safe anchoring operations and prevent uncontrolled anchor run-out.
⚓ Training Awareness: This procedure must be carried out carefully, following onboard safety procedures and supervision.
