Tail Vise Build - PART 1

Описание: I've been doodling new workbench designs in Sketchup for years, and I've got a bunch of different designs and ideas, but I've finally decided to go ahead and build one. There are a few images of the overall bench design in this video, and I'll get more into that as the build progresses. Rather than a less expensive dimensional lumber softwood design vs. a more expensive hardwood design, I've come up with a hybrid. It utilizes softwood for the base and a large part of the top, but the vises, dog holes, and other high-wear parts are hardwood.

I'm starting with the tail vise, because the idea of this vise is that the wagon, screw, and housing--including the dog holes along the length of the bench--are a unit or a sub-assembly that I can make ahead of time, and then build into the benchtop. That also means, that I can remove it from the workbench at some point in the future and repair, modify, or reuse it.

The sketchup modeling can only take me so far, so in this video, you'll be see a number of changes I'm making in the design as I go, based on the stock I have, how things look in reality, and some testing. When I'm done, I'll update the model, and if anyone is interested, I'll find a way to make it available. There is a ways to go before we get there.

Lastly, you'll see that I'm using a lot of the tools I've restored, modified or made on this channel, and I haven't given up on those projects, I just need to get a functioning bench together. I waste a bunch of time just trying to figure out how to hold material in place so I can get things done.
