What is osmotic pressure and how does it relate to plant growth? Osmotic pressure is a term that describes the movement of salt within water and the pressure that is exerted through this process.
With plant growth, water and salt will move towards areas with more water and salt. So, if a plant has a lower water and salt content in its roots, water and salt will move up into the leaves and plant material. The water is evaporated out into the atmosphere, and the salt is left in the leaves to be metabolized. This is a very good thing, as if we have an excess of salt in the root zone, the water and salt will remain in the root zone due to the osmotic pressure in the roots, which causes the plant to have to fight for any drop of water or nutrients, resulting in stunted growth of your plant.
By having higher salt content in the plant material, you will be able to maintain a good rate of metabolic processing of water and nutrient.
