KARNEVAL 2018 🎉

Описание: Forget everything you know about Oktoberfest because Germany truly comes to life by displaying its true colours and heritage come Karneval (Carnival? Carneval? However you want to spell it) season.

Also known as the "fifth" season, Karneval is a rather satirical Catholic tradition that begins on 11/11 at 11:11am. During the beginning and end of the season, people take to the streets, dressed in all sorts of costumes.

The final week ends right before the Lent season, preceded by Weiberfastnacht (Fat Thursday or Women's Carnival Day), Rosenmontag (Rose Monday i.e., the highlight of Karneval), and Ashermittwoch (Ash Wednesday).

During this final week, citizens gather together to form impressive floats, walk the streets of their respective city for many hours and showcase their musical, acrobatic and spirit-filled talents.

Traditions vary city-to-city such as yelling "Alaaf" in Cologne and yelling "Helau" in Düsseldorf, which are fool's calls typically shouted out by people in the streets.

Some of the most iconic cities that celebrate Karneval are Cologne, Düsseldorf, Aachen and Münster in the North Rhine-Westphalia region, as well as Mainz over in the Rhineland-Palatinate region, among others.

I had the opportunity to visit Mainz, Cologne and Düsseldorf to soak in the wild and action-packed tradition of Karneval. I have to say, I was far from disappointed. I hope this video does justice by showcasing the magnitude of the celebrations across Germany.
