About Mawaca:
MAWACA is a group that researches and recreates music from the most diverse parts of the globe.
It is formed by a vocal group that interprets songs in more than 20 languages and the singers are accompanied by an acoustic instrumental group: accordion (Gabriel Levy), cello and flute (Ana Eliza Colomar), soprano sax (Ramiro Marques), double bass (Ricardo Zoyo), in addition to percussion instruments such as Indian tablas, Arabic derbak, African djembé, berimbau, vibraphone, various tambourines (Armando Tibério and Valéria Zeidan). The group's singers are Angélica Leutwiller, Cris Miguel, Magda Pucci, Rita Braga, Sandra Oakh and Zuzu Leiva.
The group's repertoire is made up of songs from disparate traditions such as Japanese and Irish; from countries as far apart as Finland and Japan, Central Africa and Indonesia, different regions such as the Middle East and the Iberian Peninsula. These are ancestral themes that make it possible to research multiple sounds, revealing local ethnic characteristics, always seeking to establish interrelationships with Brazilian music.
With innovative and creative arrangements, Mawaca presents vibrant music, pearls of the world repertoire that have been handed down from generation to generation through oral tradition. The transcriptions and arrangements of these ancestral themes are made by Magda Pucci who, in addition to developing the repertoire research, is also responsible for the group's musical direction.
Mawaca exemplifies with their music issues that involve cultural pluralism. Thus, it has been seeking to open the eyes and ears of its audience on issues related to religious tolerance as well as racial differences, and to make people understand the ethnic differences, be it the indigenous man from northern Brazil or the Arab Muslim or the refugee African as well as the feminine issues always present in the group's sound universe.
