South Central was the first volume in Steinmetz’s “South” trilogy, centered on Knoxville, Tennessee. In this book Steinmetz photographs teenagers and young adults against suburban backdrops. A recurring motif is the local “South Central Bell” pay phone, symbolizing the community’s social and economic undercurrents. Through these intimate black-and-white images of playgrounds, backyards and streets, Steinmetz conveys both tenderness and the quiet struggles of life in small-town America.
Published by Nazraeli Press in 2007 (reissued 2020), South Central established Steinmetz’s reputation for understated yet powerful storytelling. Mark Steinmetz (b. 1961) has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and his photographs are in the collections of MoMA, the Met and other leading museums.
