It was an absolute delight learning this piece. "Poissons d'Or" (or golden fish) is the final piece in Book II of Debussy's Images, a set of three musical poems that paint a specific scene for the listener.
I'm pretty sure when Debussy wrote this piece he was thinking of an image he saw of a golden fish on a piece of Japanese embroidery. In Japan and China we call this fish "koi". They are beautiful and elegant, and apparently caught the imagination of a rather sophisticated Westerner in a way never seen before.
So close your eyes, and as you listen to the music, imagine this koi swimming around a beautifully decorated pond, sometimes playfully swishing about, sometimes elegantly flaunting its colourful scales, sometimes submerging itself so it becomes a blur of bubbles and colour.
I have no idea how a still image could inspire someone to compose a piece as incredible as this, but we can only thank Debussy for being able to bring a still image to life.
