In this video I’m talking about security on the Camino de Santiago, not so much personal safety, but the security of your personal items. It’s something a lot of first-time pilgrims worry about, and honestly, with good reason. You’re carrying your whole life in that backpack for weeks, and you’re constantly in new places, cafés, albergues, dorms and shower rooms. So in this one I’m sharing the simple habits and bits of gear I use to keep my passport, pilgrim credential, cash and cards safe, and still enjoy the walk without stressing.

I keep things very simple on the Camino. The golden rule is that my valuables never leave my body. Not in the albergue, not in the shower, not at a café. Everything stays on me in a soft neck wallet tucked away under my shirt. I’ll show how I use a tiny “ready use” wallet — which is usually just a reinforced plastic bag for small amounts of cash so I’m not digging around in my main wallet in public. I also explain why I don’t travel with fancy gear or expensive jewellery, and how easy it is to lose things, even if nobody steals them.

I also cover a few practical tips like using dry sacks when heading to the shower, hanging your valuables on an S-hook, keeping your passport in a Ziploc bag so it doesn’t get soaked with sweat, and making sure you’re discreet at ATMs. Plus, I touch briefly on personal security — including the excellent AlertCops app, and two videos I’ve done on solo walking and helping others feel safe.

Finally, a quick word about Camino scammers. They’re very rare, but they do exist — usually someone posing as a pilgrim with a hard-luck story looking for €50. I share my thoughts on how to handle these situations without becoming paranoid.

Overall, the Camino is incredibly safe, but a few simple habits will make sure your valuables stay with you all the way to Santiago.
