makima is the main antagonist of the public safety saga. she was the chief cabinet secretary's personal devil hunter who took denji in as her human pet. she is later revealed to be the control devil who embodies the concept of control or conquest and a member of the four horsemen at the time. following her death, she was reincarnated as nayuta. on the surface, makima seems to be a kind, gentle, social and friendly woman who is usually seen wearing a smile on her face the entire time and acts relaxed and confident even during a crisis, speaking in a professional tone to her workers. as her natural appearance is nearly identical to that of a human, she avoids disclosing her devil nature to most of her underlings and spends much of the series posing as a human contracted to a devil rather than a devil herself. however, this is only a façade that she uses to fulfil her ultimate goal. after the death of aki hayakawa, makima begins to reveal her true colors to denji. makima's true face is of someone that is machiavellian and calculating, who sees people around her as nothing more than "dogs" she can use as much as she likes and must obey her without any hesitation for her goals.

mr. boss (or simply the boss) is the overarching protagonist of smiling friends. he is the head of smiling friends inc. and one of the five main characters. he typically informs his employees about their jobs and clients. mr. boss is a highly eccentric but very friendly individual. he is polite and casual around his employees, and he seems to genuinely trust and regard them as his friends, often endearingly referring to them as his "boys." he is also very passionate about running his business, as he is always quick to respond to clients regardless of the occasion (though he sometimes plays video games in his office). much like charlie and pim, he also has a knack for making people smile, and seems to be even more skilled at it than his employees when the situation demands it. despite his evident insanity, he is also shown to have a strong enough moral center to overcome his urges. He is also in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
