Sudden Jibe on Antique Sailboat

Описание: Minutes into my sailing adventure, I was caught unprepared by what seemed like gale-force winds at the time. I was so surprised I almost fell out of the boat! Fighting to regain control I recall reaching for the rudder and instinctively turning the wrong way. At this point my grip on the main sail was less than good, and my trajectory sent the boom even further off the starboard side and wanted to capsize the sailboat.

I turned the rudder the other direction and corrected the extreme leverage I was experiencing. During this time the daggerboard is making a noise I've never heard before which didn't help at all! All I could think about was the potential that this antique sailboat was going to tear itself apart. The boom is a lot closer now, but I'm still in correction mode. I look back for a split second to be sure my kayak hadn't capsized during the near-tragic event. I feel the wind shift and look ahead to maintain course just in time to dodge the boom coming around, which could have caused some extreme injuries. I was nearly neck deep in an uncontrolled jibe. I was, however, wearing a helmet just in case something like this happened. It happened more times than once!
