I spend some time lamenting the turbulent state of the modern Blockbuster opening weekend and the culture of the Hollywood Box Office, in order to better understand the phenomenon of the weekends top grossing films.
The Box Office media spectacle we have experienced for the past forty years is a product of four major factors:
-The Studios Decision to publish weekend grosses. Spurred on by more readily available data aggregating technology and the advent of media and the 24 hour news cycle.
-The Innovation of the Day and Date release popularized by filmmaker and activist Tom Laughlin with his film Billy Jack in 1973.
-The Rise of the Multiplex theatre and its creator, AMC theaters founder, Stanley Durwood.
-The implementation of mass marketing and focus group techniques ported over from political polling in the late 70's by NRG founder Joe Farrel.
The video has been painstakingly edited to include relevant high definition clips and photographs to illustrate my points and I hope you all enjoy it!
