This conversation begs the question, Does racism grow because too many of us are ignoring the things we are in conflict with and becoming satisfied with the things we like?
“Racism is like rain falling on your head and you don’t even know you are wet”, says Ibram Kendi. Knowing we are all wet, how do we open our umbrellas? How do we stand up for equality? How do we divest ourselves of what has been falling on us since birth?
One way is being open and honest in safe spaces and inviting differing perspectives to weigh in. We can't see ourselves. We need other people to reflect back to us. In this book study group (How to be an Antiracist) we do just that. We do it to surface unconscious biases. We do it to learn and grow. We do it because equity, inclusion, equality and love of humanity is deep in our hearts.
